Full disclosure here. I don't BBQ and will probably never use it on a BBQ or in a smoker. However, this little puppy has been a wonderful asset to have with my good old fashioned gas oven. Actually, it is in use right now as I type. I have a probe jammed in a huge baking potato in the oven right now, and the other probe is wedged in between two frozen pork chops thawing out under running water in a bowl in the sink. Right now, I only have the original two probes that came with it, but I do plan on getting more. The thermometer, and smart phone software will accommodate the use of six probes at the same time. That seems a like a lot, but if you have a big grill or smoker and load it up with several different things at the same time it makes sense to be able to monitor several things at the same time. For me, a couple more probes would be nice. When I bought it, there was a card in the box with a website you could get two free probes if you went to that site and registered for warrantee. I don't know if they are still offering that or not, but I can't find my card now, so no freebie for me. However, the additional probes look to be very reasonable in cost, and I think they are well worth the investment, but I'm not going to stop looking for that card. I said I'm using it right now in a baking potato, and some frozen pork chops. I want to make clear that the Thermometer display unit does not show freezing temperatures, so right now it reads "LLL", but looking on my phone for that probe/channel I can see the temp is now at 29-degrees, and there is even a little graph I can look at to see how it rose from the starting temp of 7-degrees. The sink I'm using to thaw out the cops is about 15 feet from my stove top, so the wire on the probe is not long enough to reach, however I discovered you can plug the probe into a "standard issue" headphone cable, or AUX cable extender, and be able to use it further away. I don't know if the extra cable messes up the accuracy of the temp reading, but hey... I'm thawing a pork chop so ballpark is good enough on that. I did a KC Strip a few days ago, super hot on both sides on the stovetop to get a nice char, then popped the cast iron pan into the oven to hang out a while with another potato I was baking. I had it set for Medium Rare and kind of dozed off a bit, and when the temperature alarm went off there was no problem waking me up and getting my attention. The thermometer unit has a very LOUD beeping alarm, so you get the alert on both your phone and from the thermometer. I guess one possible downside might be that I don't see how to lower that volume, so I'm stuck with too loud for in the house, but if it were being used outdoors in the grill at a family gathering or what not, that is probably a good level. I just checked, the pork chops are now at 37 on my phone, and the thermometer display is now giving me the 37 as well, so not showing freezing temp is pretty much a non-issue for BBQ/smoking/oven use. The Potato is at 207 now, so I'm going to turn off the oven and let if finish out those last few degrees on its own.... Okay, I'm back, got a bit distracted there... My pork chops are now up to 47 and the thermometer beeped to let me know the potato is done, so I had to take it out. So at this point, I'm going to cook up the pork chop, just an easy pan fry on the stove top. I'll take off the extension cable I was using, and change to a different port on the thermometer. The thermometer remembers the temp settings for alarms you made on your phone, so I have number 1 set with no alarm, it just does a temperature reading. Number two I'm going to set at what ever the magic chart says is safe temp for a pork chop. Number 4 I have set for Fish, and number 6 is set for Medium Rare beef. There are a couple spots I have not used yet. I have problems using my smart phone, it doesn't read my finger in the correct spot, and I'm lazy, so instead of changing stuff on the phone, I'm just going to change the ports I'm using on the thermometer, which for me is a lot faster than fiddling with my phone. Oh, that number 1 that just does temperature... my oven seems to have about a 15-degree range up and down of what the dial is set on, so I hooked that handy probe clip that came with the unit to a baking rack, and most of the time number one just stays there, so I can monitor my oven and get it adjusted to the correct temp before I put things in. In addition to that clip, the thermometer probes each came in a plastic storage thing. You can slide the probe in it and then wrap the cable around and pop the plug into a spot to keep everything neat and tidy when you're not using it. There was also a storage case for the temperature unit on one side, and then you can slip the probe holders under an elastic strap on the other side, then zip the case closed for storage and not have to worry about the parts getting separated from each other between uses. Oh, before I go and finish off those pork chops, when you install the software on you phone, it says something about having GPS or location turned on, it is serious about that. It will NOT install if you location service thing is turned off. After you have it installed and going, if at a later point it does not connect to the thermometer, check that location service and make sure it is on. You cannot connect at all to the thermometer if location is off on you phone. I hope this was helpful. If nothing else, I kept myself entertained while I baked a potato and thawed pork chops. Final though, I found putting the battery cover back on was a bit awkward, it doesn't seem like it slides far enough to latch, but it does. Also, the thermometer is pretty tough. I have managed to drop it or knock it off the counter three times since I've had it, and no damage whatsoever, and the battery cover did stay on every time. bye--
