Challenging

Love the look but instructions on assembly were hard to follow. Had to hire a person to install. Turned out it needed to be disassembled to lock in place. Not included in instructions.

I bought this to replace the exact same model that I installed 7-1/2 years ago. There wasn't anything noticeably wrong with the old one (the finish held up very well) but one day it stopped working properly - when operating it from the outside the latch bold wouldn't go all the way into the door. It worked properly from inside. I disassembled the handle to see what was going on and when I removed the outside plate a bunch of springs, bushings, gears, and who knows what else fell out. I tried, in vain, to figure out how the whole thing went back together and finally just ordered a replacement. I compared the replacement mechanics to my old one and they appear to be similar. It looks like there is a plate that's held in place by two small screws and somehow those screws came out and that's why all the guts dumped out when I removed it. I have no idea how that could have happened since that's the plate that's against the door. I'm calling manufacturing defect on this. The new one went in without any trouble. I'm just a bit miffed that the door handle on my parent's house is the same one when I was a kid and I replaced this one after a relatively short time.

Great looking, with switchable handle & rekeying feature

The rekeying function actually worked just like that! The set has left or right handles, and looks great. I was replacing the same set but with a different finish (and two left feet—I mean handles—that had to go!!)

Everything is great except for the instructions.

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the quality, and I was able to reset the key without any problems. It looks great on my front door and works well. After a few months, the screws haven't loosened and it remains sturdy. The instructions were an absolute mess. The instruction book used alphabetical figures (like a, b, c) while the actual parts were labeled with numbers (like 12-1309). I was able to put it together but it took much longer than it would have with proper labeling. Thank goodness for detailed pictures.

Kwikset 9800-107

This lock set is to replace my 20 years old set due to the broken lever. The style is very much the same but the outside door handle is not. The minor change on this is the bottom hole and it provided hardware is not compatible. I had to go hunting for a long 1 1/2 " screw (not included.) The problem is the hole thread size is not standard. I made many trips to three different hardware stores and still cannot find the right screw matching thread size.

Good quality, fair price

It fit perfectly, replacing a 20 year old Quikset front door latch/lock. Works smoothly. Easy to install other than separating the trim ring from the mounting piece for the inside handle. A few taps with a butt of the screwdriver released the two OK.
