Hateful socket spring-clips the biggest drawback.
I've had these socket rails for decades; but my most recent purchase was in 2006, from Snap-On. I have about twenty rails in all, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" They used to be made with "pegs" that the socket would slide over. The old peg system wonderful. The newer production--like my '06 Snap-On units--use a molded plastic spring clip, and I outright HATE them. The clips grab the socket so firmly that the spring clip pulls out of the rail. Then I have to dig the spring clip out of the socket end before I can snap the socket onto a ratchet. The spring clips are worse than useless, they're outright annoying. The rails are a bit flimsy; they'll crack between peg holes. Eventually, the entire end of the rail breaks off. I've got a dozen rails that are now shorter than they should be. Protoco needs to revise the rail design, or the material it's made from to increase durability. Do I condemn them for having flimsy rails that crack? Do I condemn them for the terrible spring clips? Or do I say that I've got some rails that go back twenty years or more, still function (even though they're shorter now than they were when new) and my good old pegs work just fine? The last time I talked to Protoco, (a couple of years ago) the pegs were still available although there's no warranty on the fragile rails. They warranty my broken rails, and make the pegs a standard item, this review goes to five stars. The concept is fabulous, but the execution is poor.
