pilot punches are for roll pins

I hate roll pins, but they crop up in my life anyway. A roll pin is a hollow pin that is compressed when it is drifted in and is not supposed to drift back out on its own even though there is no pin stop. Roll pins are easily damaged if you do not use the correct punches. To remove roll pins, you need a pilot punch (that is what Mayhew calls them). Such a punch has a slightly recessed face with a dimple in the middle. The size is correct for a compressed roll pin and makes it possible to remove the roll pin with a minimum of damage to the pin (very important if you plan to re-use the pin). For inserting roll pins, the pilot punch is better than a solid pin punch, but not much better. You will need to use a bigger size pilot punch to get the roll pin started, and still it will be quite difficult. Better to get a roll pin starter punch (I use the double-ended Schuster set for my Marlin roll pins). As for quality, I only use Mayhew, after trying some others. They are available in British and metric sizes, they are all size-marked on the punch, the handles are articulated to reduce slipping, and they do not bend under normal use. Take a little care, and they will last a very long time. And, the design is different than the Mayhew pin punches (i.e. flat-head punches for solid pins), so that I do not grab the wrong type by mistake.

Great for PP1 roll pins

My coworkers have lost this pilot pin punch multiple times. I always replace it and Mayhew is top quality for everyday use

Perfect size

This pin has a smaller grip diameter then the other punches I have. They fit perfectly in the access channel I have to work in. They allow me to knock out the Spring Pins on the axels for the Industrial Order Picker Machines I work on without getting stuck like other brands with larger grips. The only drawback is If you are hitting it freehand its hard to put a hard swing on it due to the shortness of the grip. For my purposes though it is absolutly perfect.
