Just pull the trigger and buy it

They work just as advertised. Grabs lots of lint, dog hair, dust, and more. Easy to install. Easy to take down and replace. Holds 6 in a pack and great for half a year. We store them in the closet and once a month replace. Great product!

Been using a MERV 12 or 13 and our HVAC told us our furnace/air needed more air to pass through the filter and told us to go to a MERV7. I bought a cheap one at the hardware store and fell apart right away. These filters are as sturdy as the MERV 12 and seem to be doing a great job.

These are perfect for normal furnace operation

Make sure when you are selecting a furnace filter that you do not go too high on the MERV rating. There is a tradeoff between high filtration and reduced air flow. A sheet of plywood placed in your filter slot would not allow any allergens to pass, but it also wouldn't allow any air to pass. Many furnaces come with a recommended MERV range, and if yours doesn't you can go online and there are guides for selecting the right filter based on your needs. For my house and family these are perfect for 3/4 of the year. During high pollen season we go one level up, and then back to these for the majority of the year.

They changed these filters and they're horrible now

Within the last year or so 3M changed these filters. They used to be solidly made and would easily last 30-90 days depending on usage. The new redesign made them significantly more cheaply made, and I am no longer going to use these. The filter material itself is noticeably thinner and sometimes tears over the course of a month. 3M knows the thinner material was a bad idea, so they added some kind of webbing on one side to help hold the filter together. This keeps large rips from forming in the very thin, cheap filter material, but small rips and tears still happen. Also the glue that holds the cardboard edges is very cheap and weak. Out of the 6 filters I got in my most recently ordered box, 5 of them had the edges coming apart. Nothing I couldn't fix with some tape, but it's very disappointing that right out of the box these things were unusable and needed me to patch them up. I don't know why 3M changed how these were made (well, probably to save money) but the new design is horrible and I will be looking elsewhere for my next order.

They work

The furnace repair man told me the problem I was having with my furnace not cycling correctly was because I was using too dense of a filter. I was using a more expense Filtrete that was marketed to get rid of everything. Unfortunately it also got rid of optimal air flow also. No easier way to purchase these than to have a box of 6 delivered to your house. I always have one available to replace so I can switch as soon as I see one is dirty. There was a better price on these last year on Amazon.
