Might not fit properly in your 16x25x5 filter cabinet

Today I changed my furnace air filter, and realized that 3M had made an unfortunate change to the product. The old filter and the new filter are the identical product from 3M with one small but important change. The old filter had two foam gaskets on both the top and bottom of the filter. The old filter slid smoothly into the filter cabinet with a nice airtight seal on the top and bottom. The new filter has only a single foam strip on the the top and bottom, and completely misses the top and bottom rails of my filter cabinet. The filter needs to have an airtight seal against all four sides of your filter cabinet, or the air will follow the path of least resistance and bypass the filter. Your filter will last forever, but won't catch any dust! I needed to add strips of foam to get the new filter to seal. Doesn't seem right for a filter that costs as much as these do!

Works well

I struggle with allergens. This filter does the trick. It is expensive to replace it every two months, but it is totally worth it. It captures the soot and ash, which is nice. It also fits tightly, so I don’t need to worry about things getting around it. It took me a while to figure out getting it out of the furnace, but a dollar paint can opener from Home Depot works wonders.

Expensive and a bit rough quality-wise, but does the job

Good: Performs as advertised. The new furnace/AC I had installed a year and a half ago takes these instead of the old-style one-inch-thick filters, and since then the air in my home has been noticeably fresher, with less dust. Bad: For a 3M product, the assembly quality doesn't impress me. All four of the filters I've used to date have had pleats bent and/or crushed up against each other, which would substantially reduce the effective filter area. The pleats are glued in that way, so it isn't a shipping problem. I have to take a few minutes before installation to massage the filter material back into a reasonable shape. The good news is, although I've had to break a few glue dots to get the filter material back into place, it's sturdy enough to withstand these corrections without tearing. High price even for a premium filter. Ugly: An app? Seriously!? Bottom line: While these filters work and work well, they've gone up significantly in price over the past 18 months. I suspect the cost of changing them every three months will have me looking at off-brands next time. Five stars, minus one for the high price.

Looked used!

I ordered 2 filters. One came with the directions and was completely wrapped in clear cellophane. The other looked like it had been used! Bent, unwrapped and no labels. I have ordered these before and wasn't happy to fine one that looked like a used return!

Wider than 4"

Item is much wider than 4". I had to remove parts from the furnace to make it fit. Make sure you check your exact measurements.

SIMPLY EXCELLENT

If you have pets this filter is a must. I have five dogs and this filter was amazing. Costly but well worth it.

Size is different than expected

Measure your old filter before buying. Theses are not an industry standard of being under size of the dimensions on the filter. Mine were 1/4 inch bigger on length and height, and 1/2 bigger in width than what was listed, so these filters will not fit my furnace.

Beware as these are NOT 4" wide. They are about 4.5" wide. And further beware that you can buy "Filtrete 3M 16x25x4" that are about 3.5" wide!! The other dimensions also differ. Let's recap - TWO DIFFERENT SIZES altogether, BOTH having the exact same "3M Filtrete 16x25x4" label!! Way to go 3M. It's like a bad joke. I ordered 6 of these and now have to send them all back. I think that when it says it's for a Honeywell furnace, they are the larger size. What is so hard about writing the ACTUAL dimensions on the packaging?!
