The easiest way to navigate.

I spent 7 years as a surveyor, eventually party chief, and carried one of these most of that time. If you learn to orient yourself to a bearing instead of a direction and departure, it's about the simplest way you can make sense of maps and use them to your advantage. I used one of these in fair weather and foul, and even used them near metallic equipment and structures I thought might throw them off - but unless you were very close to such, it didn't matter. If I were in a survival situation, the first things I'd want would be a knife and a source of fire - the next things would be a map and my Suunto.

No batteries needed

If you spend your time in the outdoors professionally, you probably know about SUUNTO compasses. I used this model when I did land surveying. I was so impressed with the accuracy and quality, it stuck with me and I always intended to obtain one. I recently purchased one to teach my kids how to find their way around the wilderness without electronics. This fits the bill as it's all analogue, no batteries, no motherboard, no apps, no firmware, no big data… just old school use of earth's magnetic poles. The only thing to be aware of is that the compass that the dial sits in a liquid filled chamber. It's is what makes this compass so good, especially when you use the optics to follow a bearing. However, the seals can eventually go if the compass is banged around carelessly. If properly cared for, it should last a lifetime.

Price jump?

I love this compass, hands down the best I have had for surveying. I was looking to buy a second since I just bought this one a year ago. I’m absolutely shocked The price went from $113 to $165. I understand inflation but this is crazy.

The compass is very easy to read and use. It comes in a nice case. It can not be adjusted for location deviation as is stated in description.

Suunto - accurate to 1/3 of a degree; what more do you need to know...?

This is a top-of-the-range piece of kit and although it might seem expensive, there are times when only a Suunto will do. I have no idea why the spec says it's Unisex; surely so much is obvious?

Präzise und wertig

Ein echtes Präzisionsinstrument. Und macht auch einen sehr wertigen Eindruck. Wenn man sich mit der bedienung vertraut gemacht hat (oder sich wie in meinem Fall schon damit auskennt) kann man damit sehr präzise und schnell Messungen vornehmen. Für die Kartenarbeit eher bedingt geeignet aber mit einem Lineal o.ä. als Anlegekantenverlängerung auch da gut zu nutzen.
