A nice cutter, but...

This is a well-made router bit. It cuts smoothly and gives a good surface finish on the wood. I have found Bosch router bits to be long-lasting in the past, and I expect this one to continue the tradition. However, like most router bits, this one misleads (lies) about its plunging ability. The Amazon write-up says, "Specially designed tip for fast plunge cutting." In contrast to spiral carbide cutters, this bit has no cutting element in the very center of the bit. As a result, you can only plunge vertically about 3/32nds of an inch, before the center of the bit hits the wood, and prevents further plunging. The only solution that I know of is slide the router sideways as you plunge, which is aggravating at best, and decreases precision, control, and safety. All other brands of straight router bits share this problem, except some from Woodtek. If you want to plunge straight down, get a spiral bit or a Woodtek. Or pre-drill your mortises, which I actually prefer, since it can save time and makes the expensive cutters last longer.

I am impressed with this bit. I use it a lot right now on my cnc. I needed a long bit and couldn't afford a solid carbide one so I took a chance on this. It has been doing great so far.
